Halloween is the time of year when people like to see scary things. People set up haunted houses that we know are fake but they still manage to scare us. Whether it’s that shock factor or you really are scared of ghosts, it can be frightful. What about the real haunted places though? They are there year round and are usually scarier than the fake ones. Today I’m going to tell you about two haunted places that you could travel to in a single day.
The first place is the Walker House. The Walker House in located in Mineral Point, WI and was built in 1836. It was originally built as a place for teamsters to meet. A few years later when the railroad depot was built across the street, the Walker House became the Mineral Point Hotel. The hotel was used until 1957 when it closed for seven years.
Throughout the following years the Walker House was owned by many different people. It went through a lot of renovating and was reopened in 2008 as a bed and breakfast. The bed and breakfast didn’t do very well and the building is currently only open to paranormal investigators.
Now you may be saying to yourself that’s interesting but how is this building haunted? The Walker House became famous because of its public hanging on November 1st 1842. Just a few years after the Walker House was built a man by the name of William Caffee was hung in front of a crowd of 4,000-5,000 people. Caffee was accused of shooting a man during an argument and sentenced to death by hanging.
Throughout the years there have been many sightings of a ghostly figure, either headless or with his head, dressed in the attire of a man from the 1800’s. This ghost has caused many problems including: ghostly noises, flying glasses and silverware, moving chairs, and just merely sitting on the back porch. There have also been sightings of another man just wondering around the pub area and many unexplained screams and other noises. Paranormal investigators have determined that there are 22 different spirits in the Walker House. Whether this is true or not, I would never want to see or hear one of those spirits.
The last haunted place I’m going to talk about is Weary Road. Weary Road is located in Evansville and too many is considered the most haunted place in Wisconsin. Although I have never been to Weary Road, from all the stories I have heard I wouldn’t want to go there. There are two stories to why Weary Road is haunted. It has been said that some boy was car surfing along Weary Road and died on the bridge and he continues to haunt the place today. The second story is one that more people believe in and is more widely known. According to the story there was a man named Old Man Weary, for whom the road is named after, that was thought to be a pedophile. The townspeople didn’t want him there so they burnt his house down while he was in it. What the townspeople didn’t know was that his children were in the house at the time also, and they also died in the fire. It is said that his wife came home to the burnt house and hung herself.
Many visitors have claimed to have seen Old Man Weary along the road, almost as if he is protecting the road. People have also seen a women hanging from the trees, small children’s voices and imps (a small mischievous demon) within the trees. Many people say that you see the most after your third visit there, for others it is almost immediate though. When I interviewed a friend who went to Weary Road she told me that at first all she heard were the screams. Later she saw eyes and figures that she couldn’t make out. She also told me that when they parked their car on the bridge and tried to start it again it would start. Also one of the people she was with started spontaneously bleeding from his arm. These are both things that have happened to many people visiting Weary Road.
So next year when Halloween comes around, if you’re brave enough take a trip to one of Wisconsin’s many haunted places.
