Discipline Techniques
·
Pre-kindergarten-“Safe Spot”- instead of time outs, the safe spot idea comes from Dr. Becky Bailey‘s Conscious Discipline book. If a child needs time away from the group he or she can go to the safe spot to help understand and regulate their emotions. In the safe spot we teach the child how to problem solve and make better choices. Items you can include in your safe spot are:
o Soft stuffed animals for hugging if we are sad
o Books from the Best Behavior series
o Wave bottle (has a very calming effect)
o No more tears magic sprinkles
Kindergarten-Bingo- When a kid is doing what he/she is supposed to be doing and the teacher sees him/her, the student gets to sign his/her name in a box. At the end of the day, the teacher rolls a dice for the letter and the number. The student in that space gets a reward.
1st-2nd-“Good Slips”- The teacher has small slips of paper that say you did a great thing on the front with a small picture and on the back the teacher writes the students name who was doing something good. The teacher writes the students name on the back and then hands the student the good slip so they know they were doing something good. The student then puts the good slip in a designated basket. At the end of the week, the teacher picks 1-2 good slips out of the basket. The student or students whose name is on the back of the slip gets a small prize.
3rd-4th- Picture Puzzle-teacher places magnets on the back of each piece of a puzzle. When the class works together or is behaving as a whole they get a piece to the puzzle. When the puzzle is complete they earn a reward.
5th- Number Chart-When students do something good, pull out a stick with a number on it (1-100) and color in that corresponding number. When 10 numbers in a row are colored in, students get a party or other reward.
