Standard Seven Artifact Reflection
Title:Science Lesson Plan that includes Art
Date:September 2011
Description:
My artifact for this experience is a lesson plan that I wrote for my Art & Social Studies for Teachers Class. I worked on this lesson plan for about two weeks for two hours twice a week. For this lesson plan I had to write a plan for a science class that involved some type of an art project.
Alignment Reflection:
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment
I chose to align this artifact with standard seven; teachers are able to plan different kinds of lessons. I think this artifact best fits with standard seven because it shows that I can create a learning experience for the students while doing fun activities. This lesson plan addresses the variation in learning styles and differences of students. This lesson plan is linked to the student's own experiences. Most students have seen the animals represented in the lesson, and it makes it more interesting for them. By writing this lesson plan, I have a better understanding of all the work it takes to plan effective curriculum for students.
UW-Platteville Knowledge, Skill and Disposition Statement Alignments:
I aligned this artifact with KSD1.e, designs coherent instruction. While working on this lesson plan, I had to make sure that all the information presented was relevant and that I had goals set for the students. This lesson plan included a variety of learning activities including guest speakers, group discussions and an art project. As a result of this experience, I learned that all lesson plans need to be relevant, engaging and they must have goals for the students.
Secondary Alignments:
KSD1.c Selects Instructional Goals
KSD1.f Assess Student Learning
KSD1.d Demonstrates Knowledge of Resources
Reflections:
What I learned about teaching/learning?
Through writing this lesson plan I learned that preparing to teach students is more complicated than it looks. Teachers can not just find activities and assignments for students that relate to a topic that they are teaching. These activities must be consistent with curriculum goals of the school and the state. I learned that teachers need to provide a variety of ways, (visual, physical, and audio) for students to learn, because not all students can learn in one way, all students have different learning styles.
What I learned about myself as a prospective teacher?
During this experience, I learned I need to be aware of curriculum goals and be able to relate my lessons to those goals. I can’t just find activities that look fun for my students. I also learned that working with the community and finding activities that can be done in the community is a great way to get students to relate to the lesson.
