Standard One Artifact Reflection
Title: Praxis II and Foundations of Reading Test Scores
Date:December 29th, 2012 and December 3rd, 2013
Description:
My artifacts for standard one are my Praxis II and Foundations of Reading Test FORT) score reports. The Praxis II test is an Elementary Education Content Knowledge exam. The exam tests four core subjects: Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science. I completed the test on December 29th, 2012, in which I scored a 180 out of a possible 200. The FORT consists of four areas: foundations of reading development, development of reading comprehension, reading assessment and instruction and integration of knowledge and understanding. I completed this test on December 3rd, 2013 and scored a 248.
Alignment:
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment:
I aligned these artifacts to standard one: teachers know the subjects they are teaching. I chose to align these artifacts with standard one because they show that I am knowledgeable in the subjects that I am teaching. A passing score of 147 is required on the Praxis II; however, I achieved a 180 the first time I took the exam. The FORT requires a passing square of 240; however I achieved a 248 the first time I took the test. The scores of the FORT range from 100-300. Through my pre-student teaching and student teaching experiences, I have continued to learn and grow in all the core subject areas. Having the knowledge of these core subjects allows me to be prepared to teach the central concepts to the students in a meaningful way.
UW-Platteville Knowledge, Skill and Disposition Statement Alignments:
I aligned these artifacts with KSD1.a: demonstrates knowledge of content and pedagogy. Through my studies I have learned that I have a wide variety of knowledge in multiple subjects. My Praxis II and FORT exam scores show that extensive knowledge. By knowing my content I will be able to teach the core subjects to my students and develop lessons that are effective. With my knowledge I am able to understand what concepts students are struggling to understand and therefore will be able to make sure that any misconceptions that students have will be corrected during my lessons.
Secondary Alignments:
KS1.e Designs coherent instruction
KS1.c Selects instructional goals
Reflections:
What I learned about teaching/learning?
Through completing these exams I have learned how important it is to know and understand the content in all subject areas. As an Elementary teacher I will be responsible for teaching all subject areas and in order to do that properly I need to be knowledgeable in all those subjects. The FORT exam was more in depth in reading compared to the Praxis II exam. Through taking this exam I learned how important early reading concepts are to reading. Having a deep understanding of phonics, and phonemic awareness will help me understand the areas of need in the development of reading. I have also learned the importance of deep understanding of the central concepts. RtI has become a huge part of school districts and in order to have a successful RtI program teachers need to know their content. With this content knowledge I will be able to differentiate my instruction. I will also be able to analyze a variety of assessments in these contest areas to gear my instruction towards each child’s individual needs.
What I learned about myself as a prospective teacher?
As a prospective teacher I have learned that I have the knowledge to teach lessons in all subject areas. Having the knowledge in these areas will allow me to write effective lesson plans and make those lesson plans engaging and meaningful to students. I have also learned what areas I need to improve my understanding Although I passed both of the exams, some areas had lower scores than others. Knowing this will allow me to focus my professional development on those areas with lower scores. Again, I have learned a lot about RtI through these tests. Being able to teach to fidelity will have an impact on whether or not my students succeed. If they do need to step up into the second tier of the RtI process I will be able to find additional engaging, hands-on, inquiry lessons that review what was taught but in a different way so that the student will understand it. Creating a personal reading, math or learning plan for a child is something that I will be able to do, because of my knowledge in the content, to create meaningful learning experiences for my students.
