Standard Five Artifact Reflection
Title: Future Classroom Design, Discipline Techniques & Five Minute Fillers
Date: November 2012
Description:
My artifacts for this experience include my future classroom design, discipline techniques and five minute fillers. These were all assignments during my pre-student teaching practicum. My future classroom design includes different learning areas for a kindergarten classroom. The discipline techniques are for a range of grade levels all being developmentally appropriate. My five minute fillers are a list of activities to be used during a time of transition in the classroom. These activities will help any teacher manage their students.
Alignment:
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment:
I aligned these artifacts to standard five because they all help me as a teacher manage a classroom. My future classroom design is designed to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction but at the same time takes into account individual learning needs.
Both the discipline techniques and five minute fillers align with standard five because they are a way to keep students motivated in the learning process and to encourage good behavior in students. Having a wide variety of developmentally appropriate techniques shows that I am able to understand the individual and group needs. What works for kindergarteners will not work the same for fifth graders.
UW-Platteville Knowledge, Skill and Disposition Statement Alignments:
My future classroom design aligns best with KS2.e: organizes physical space. My design provides a safe learning environment for students. The space is arranged to best serve the students. The separated areas provide a productive learning environment while still being close enough for interaction.
My discipline techniques and five minute fillers align best with KSD2.c: manages classroom procedures. These two artifacts are ways for me to mange students and instructional groups. It helps my students be productive and independent and keeps students working at all times even during transitions. Five minute fillers help maintain classroom structure and make sure routines occur smoothly. My discipline techniques are a way for students to share responsibility of the classroom environment.
Secondary Alignments:
KSD2.a Creates an environment of respect and rapport
KSD2.d Manages student behavior
KSD2.b Establishes a culture for learning
Reflections:
What I learned about teaching/learning?
As a result of creating my future classroom, I learned that placement of things in my class is extremely important. If there is too much room, it will leave room for students to run and create mischief. It is also important that certain items are located near each other. For example the costumes and props should be next to the drama center, the computers should be next to the writing center. These things need to be close to each other to better serve students and make efficient use of their time when in these centers.
Creating discipline techniques and five minute fillers taught me that teachers always need to be prepared. If there is a lull moment, students can get into mischief and cause trouble. Having a good discipline technique is something that teachers need to have as well. One important part of a discipline technique is making sure that students know what the consequences and benefits are; otherwise they may not follow it.
What I learned about myself as a prospective teacher?
Learning about how to arrange a classroom was something that I first encountered this semester. As a prospective teacher, I learned that classroom arrangement is extremely important, and I learned that I am able to arrange a classroom to benefit my students. I learned that I am able to use a variety of discipline techniques to manage my classroom, and finally I learned that five minute fillers can be as simple or complex as I need them to be. As a prospective teacher, I can adapt my five minute fillers to each individual student and to different grade levels.
