Standard Two Artifact Reflection
Title: Developmental Assessment
Date: November 21st, 2012
Description:
For standard two my artifact is my developmental assessment paper that I wrote for my Guidance and Assessment class in the fall of 2012. I had to track the development of one child in my pre-student teaching placement and write a paper about how her development changed over the time that I was there.
Alignment:
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment:
I aligned this artifact to standard two: teachers know how children grow. I chose to align this artifact with standard two because I had to keep a record of the
student’s intellectual, social and personal development. Because I was keeping daily records I was able to see how the student developed. Based on those observations I was able to differentiate my instruction for this particular student. By differentiating my instruction I was able to support this particular student in her development.
UW-Platteville Knowledge, Skill and Disposition Statement Alignments:
I aligned this artifact with KSD1.b: demonstrates knowledge of students. Through my studies I have learned about the typical developmental characteristics of children, and in my pre-student teaching I was able to use that knowledge. I took detailed notes on one student in the classroom and followed her development throughout my time there. I was able to learn her interests, skills, her background, and her learning style. By keeping these records I was able to see what she needed that was different from what the other students needed.
Secondary Alignments:
KSD4.b Maintains accurate records
KS3.c Engages students in learning
Reflections:
What I learned about teaching/learning?
Through completing this assignment I learned that teachers need to be aware of the different development stages of all their students. Not all students come from the same backgrounds, learn the same way or even at the same pace. Teachers need to be able to differentiate their instruction so that the students who are not as developed in certain areas are able to accomplish just as much as the other students. A student’s social and personal development is just as important as their intellectual development, and teachers need to be able to foster that development.
What I learned about myself as a prospective teacher?
Development is something that is extremely important in teaching. As a prospective teacher, I learned that I am able to see those differences in development and plan my lessons accordingly. I learned that I am able to keep accurate records of a student’s development so not only can I help that child, but other adults are able to as well.
